So hard to throw out the old couch

April 4, 2009

We bought it used 15 years ago, and it’s ugly.  It’s had stuff spilled on it, and springs are broken.  It was never very comfortable but it’s a lot less comfortable now.  And did I mention that it’s ugly?

So why the bargaining of where it could be repositioned to?  Why the pang of regret as it is hauled out to the curb?  Well the cats were fond of it, and we’re sentimental about places the cats like to nap.

Our new couch (also purchased used) is long enough for (human) naps, much more comfortable, and in fine shape.  And slightly less ugly.  I think the cats will adapt.

Beware the wrath of transplanted cats ….

As a child, I was heartbroken when we got rid of the couch I knew for another that was in far better shape.  We get attached to things, even when they fail to serve us.

Save you love for humans, and pets, and discard old crap when its time is done.

Well, of course, it’s not the “old crap” per se that one gets nostalgic over, but the associations from one’s life that it feels (rightly and wrongly) that one is giving up.
