Astoundingly, spectacularly stupid idea

June 29, 2007

Step one: the Nevada System of Higher Education’s Board Of Regeants endorses a plan that would encourage college professors to carry guns on campus, to counter campus shootings like the one that happened at Virginia Tech.  (Because you know, those are just happening all the time… or is it, like, one or two per year, worldwide?)

Steps two and three: media finds out about the plan, and a public information officer says; “No decision has been made” on the plan to arm professors.  Really.  We’re just thinking about it.

Gee, fellas, how much time do you really need to think about this one?

Well I guess you could applaud them for “thinking” (if you can call it that) about the issue  .

When will people realize that there is not a whole lot you can do about these gun shootings.  The only commonality between nearly all of them that I have seen is two fold.

    1. The individual (or at least one of them if multiples are involved) usually seeks help or attention before committing the atrocity.  In fact in most of the cases the individual talked to a counselor or psychiatrist or psychologist before committing the acts.  In some cases the counselor or whoever tried going up the chain of command about the individual but was blocked.  Not in all cases, but this is still a sign that when a child reaches out we should listen.

    2. In most cases the individual(s) was an outcast and in some cases severely picked on.  Why do we still allow our children to do such a despicable thing?  Why do many parents, teachers, and school administrators see bullying as harmless?  I’m not trying to diminish the craziness or dementia of someone that is willing to commit murder, but is it possible that they might not have committed it if they were not treated like a piece of shit?

What we need to do is treat each other like a human being and do a better job of listening to children.  Unfortunately the proliferation of guns makes violence hard to avoid.

Not a good idea, most professors would just end up shooting themselves while trying to load a pistol.
