The real game of boggle

I love trying to visualize this stuff

Sometimes I just can’t help blinking and wondering if published numbers havn’t got a decimal or two out of place.  According to The Economist, the 480,000 jet flights in and out of London’s Heathrow airport aren’t enough for the authorities.  The 2m people living on London’s West end may soon have to endure 720,000 flights each year.

Sounds like a misprint!  But nope, I checked and it’s about right.  In the words of Kang (or Kodos, I forget which); “Holy Flurking Schnitt!”.

Unless the batteries in my slide rule have gone dead, that’s about one flight every 44 seconds, continuously.  No matter what aspect you try to visualize - the jet fuel, the soda cans, the number of passengers, the cigarettes, bars of soap, taxicabs, anything; it’s staggering.

And apparently they had a wee problem with baggage handling lately.  The matching of bags with passengers does not seem to be a solved problem.  Inventors or exceptionally courageous system analysts, take note.

Agreed, O’Hare takes the cake on busy airports here. And to make matters worse our state idiots keep trying to expand it, all the while experts and FAA officials and studies say it’s dangerous to do.
