Gas price relief is on the way

Amazingly dumb plan to help with gas costs

Senate Republicans are seriously proposing a $100 rebate check to every tax-paying American to offset high gas prices.  Really.

Sometimes a proposal is just so jaw-droppingly stupid you can barely believe it’s even real.  Of course they’ve tucked in a provision for chewing up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge too - no surprise - and even to prosecute retailers who ‘charge too much’.

This is supposed to be the conservative party?  In what way?  The $100 checks will be borrowed money that the taxpaying recipients themselves will have to pay back with interest someday.  And interference with retail pricing is guaranteed to result in an unresponsive market.  Maybe striping roads and pipelines across irreplaceable wilderness is a conservative value?

I sure hope the real Republican party is out there somewhere, planning a comeback to throw these imposters out.  And soon!

  1. Drilling in ANWAR will supply oil for what, one day or so of US demand?

Jaw dropping stupid is a great phrase not only for this bill but also for the current government, period.  The only problem is, it still isn’t adequate.

OK everyone, let’s just bend over, put our heads between our legs and kiss our butts goodbye.

  2. Yeah, I really want to borrow against the future taxes of my kids to pay for 2 tanks of gas.  I’m getting to be on very friendly terms with my bike.

  3. Terry can get TWO tanks of gas with that? Wow. (I am currently driving a Volvo, even.)

I imagine this administration gathered in a smoke-filled room, sitting around a round table with rolled, laced, marijuana, saying, “Okay, okay, seriously, . . check this out. . .”

  4. A judicious application of reefer might have helped these flatliners once, now it’s too late.

When you say the real Republican Party, would that be the Jeffersonian Republicans, or the Whigs? I consider myself to be a fiscal conservative, I believe in resource conservation, how is pandering to corporate irresponsibility and greed conservative? When were the Republicans ever conservative except in some weird prudish way?

  5. Hell, I’d be glad to see Ike again.  He wasn’t perfect but he could do basic arithmetic and had the ability to learn from his mistakes.

  6. Even though I campaigned for Stevenson (well, I was six and my father was obviously banking on the cuteness factor to win votes when he brought me along), I would support Ike against any Republican we’ve had since then, and probably against a couple of Democrats (Ford comes to mind)...
