DaVinci Code Review Review

May 23, 2006

Blockbuster movies are rarely good, so I usually wait until they are available at my favorite video store.  This is because I’m cheap, I have a low threshold of boredom, and muscle pain gets to be a problem after about forty minutes in any chair.

So it is with great pleasure that I present a review of The DaVinci Code from my friend Pete.  He’s an evangelical Christian so this one’s safe for the whole family.  :-P

While on the DVC subject, Real Live Preacher  lays down the truth track on all the church protests about the book and movie.  To wit: if I ever write a book that is in any way even mildly critical of Christianity or the Catholic Church, I should be sure to send advance copies of it to religious leaders and ask them to try to ban it.  (RLP link from ***Dave)

I’m disappointed.  When I saw the title I expected to see a review of something called the “Da Vinci Code Review” but instead it’s a review of a review of the Da Vinci Code.  Yes, I know that’s just incredibly nerdy, but that’s how I am.

The Real Preacher made a pretty good call. The bard wrote something about ‘protesting to much’ which is kinda what I figure is going on with the churches and the Da Vinci code. The more they protest the more it seems they are trying to cover something up. Hey—kind of remeinds me of congress and their protests against the FBI getting a warrant and raiding an office, huh?

I’m looking forward to the movie.  Yeah, I’ve seen all the lukewarm (or worse) reviews, but here’s the deal.  I am apparently one of the only people on the planet who was underwhelmed by the book.  I read it late, i.e. after the hype machine had been full steam for months.  So maybe I was expecting more, but I was not enamored of Brown’s writing.  While I couldn’t predict the precise outcome, I generally knew where it was going.  There were stretches where I found myself saying “OK, I get it, can we go on now?”

So why would I look forward to the movie, knowing that it’s not Oscar material?  The photography and settings.  I can’t wait to see the Louvre, Bois de Boulogne, and other locations.  To say nothing of Audrey Tautou.  Yeah, I love her.

I’ve also firstly read the book. And I liked it very much. And now I’m waiting for the good CD with the movie.
