My VW is for sale

August 19, 2007

Last thing I did with the VW was begin work on the interior.  It involved quite minor lateral forces on my fingers – not much more than when I’m weightlifting or riding my bike, but my hands have been hurting more and after that I couldn’t even sign my name.  Immersion in ice water for a half hour helped a lot but didn’t help the general physical discomfort of doing body work or restoration work on the interior.  It isn’t arthritis or carpal tunnel, it’s just the latest wrinkle in fibromyalgia.

It appears my “working on cars” days are drawing to a close.  So I’m going to buy a Honda Civic and blend in with the crowd.  Have it serviced at a garage like everyone else.  But it’s not as if I won’t have anything to do.  There’s still writing and photography, and bicycling. That should keep me out of the pool halls.

If you’re in central Illinois and thinking about getting a classic VW, drop me a line.

George:  It made me sad to hear you won’t be able to keep the VW, but your health is certainly more important. My sadness is nostalgia—Ez had a VW when we met and we had a VW for many years—until I was pregnant with Jennifer.  We were in Cincy and picking up other children to take along to church, so because of that and preparing for a 2nd child, the VW was no longer practical!
Then while living in Harrisonburg, VA—the summer Ez took classes at VA Tech in Blacksburg, he got a VW to drive back and forth on weekends, since I needed a car during the week with 2 children.
    So many memories………….

Not good news. If you have not seen it, I hope Not a Bug via reddit raises a smile.

Sorry to hear about the problem with the hands. Bad hands forced me to retire a few years back..the profit in my fishing tackle business came from my designs of custom fishing rods and it got to the point that I just could not do the wraps on the line guides not the weave in the decoration..

But life does go on and as you say, there is always something else to do

Your title caught my eye.  I miss my ol’ vw bug as well. Not because of hurt hands, but because it was the first car I had ever bought.  It was brown.  Yaa… someone before me painted it so that it looked like a pile of poop.  I never got it repainted. Wish I lived near you and had lots of money.  I would love to have another ol’ vw bug.

Hope your hands get well soon and that you find a car that you like that you don’t have to work on too hard.

I really liked that Bug.  Too bad to see it go.  If only you had a young kid that you could force to do the work. tongue_wink.gif
