In Chicago for Apple
I am sitting in my room in the Marriot hotel in Chicago. This is the view from my window:
Amazingly, the sliding door opens a couple inches so I can get fresh air and hear city noises 18 floors below.
I got to walk around a bit this afternoon – maybe more pictures later. This evening and all day tomorrow is an orientation session for Apple computers. I am astoundingly ignorant about Apples but since they are coming up more often in the support context that is why I am here.
I still like my Thinkpad better though. Actually I have two Thinkpads; one runs Windows, the other Ubuntu Linux.
UPDATE: here’s the view the next morning, looking in another direction…
It would be so cool to hang-glide off one of these buildings toward the lakeshore. Suicidal, maybe, but cool.
And here’s a pic from the Apple briefing center 34 stories up. The building under construction in the background is Donald Trump’s latest effort.
Just one more…
Be sure to report back on the orientation. I would like to hear what they go over during one of these.
BTW awesome picture. Feel free to post more if you can.
That there’s a right purty picture, yes it sure is…..
Ack.
You’re making me miss Chicago again! (I lived there in the 1990’s and have wanted to go back ever since my work took me to the East Coast.)
Oh my. I was in Chicago last weekend, at the Westin, and had a similiar view out my 22nd floor window. You’re braver than I am. I had to keep the drapes drawn to keep from getting sick.
Are you kidding? Back in the day, this is the guy who climbed (using mainly fingers and toes, and usually without a rope) a cliff/ rock face across the road from the gate to college—on his lunch hour!
I couldn’t tell ya how many times he’s seen the movie Spiderman.
Afraid of heights? he is not…..
That was a great cliff, just right for a quick climb. Will have to see if I have a picture somewhere.
True I like to climb & don’t seem to be afflicted by any fear of heights. I just happen to be afraid of other things, and I’m a big baby when confronted by them. Large dogs & major surgery, to name two.
Have seen Spiderman twice.
Apple briefing was really interesting, lots to think about. Will post detailed notes probably later tonight. All you Apple fans, get ready for a “thumpin’!”
Pretty cool pictures. I have never been to the windy city. Not much of a city boy I guess. I am looking for advice on a laptop. Not too expensive. I will be using it for my college classes. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. By the way DOF, I have started on the next short story. Thank you so much for your help!
Hey Jonesy, if you still are looking for advice, I might be able to give you a couple suggestions.
Whatever you get, Jonesey, get three years of bulletproof warranty for it. One fellow I know bought an HP for his son to use in Iraq. The screen got broken after 18 months; he shipped it back to his father, who waded through the warranty process. Result? New screen, no charge.
As to brand, I’m a big fan of the Thinkpad T and X series, but they are NOT cheap. Webs is pretty happy with his laptop maybe he’ll share some information about it.
I have applied for a loaner Apple laptop as part of the briefing program, so I will be posting updates on how that is going.
Looking forward to your next story!
