Chrome dome burn
April 13, 2006
Feeling fine, I had a wonderful outdoor lunch with friends in absolutely amazingly perfect weather. Within an hour, I began to feel inexplicably ill. Leaving work early, I went home to lie down for several hours. I’m still feeling quite under the weather.
What happened? It wasn’t the food. Just color the top of my hairless head, bright red. The malaise follows a rather large-scale sunburn, on top of a thoughtless head. After all, I have a ball cap on my desk, where it remained all through the lunch…

I have managed, over the course of a few years, to have gotten so habituated to wearing a hat outdoors, that feeling the sun on my head feels … odd.
Not that I’m particularly chrome-domed, but I cut my hair short (and a goodly patch has decided to become far shorter).
I used to wear the mesh top type ball caps but had to quit because the sun burns thru the mesh and I wound up with a checkered pate. Now I wear the booney hats with brims but floppy enough I can wad them up and stick them in my hip pocket just as I used to do my ball caps.
I’m honestly surprised, what with the fact that I spent the better part of this past Saturday wandering around the Detroit Zoo without a cap on my shaved head, that I didn’t end up with a sunburn myself.
