Playing in Peoria

January 25, 2006

I’m in Peoria, Illinois to provide technical support for conference registration.  We got all set up today and tomorrow is the avalanche of high school music students and their teachers.  Dinner was something called “salmon BLT” which is grilled salmon in a bacon/lettuce/tomato sandwich on toasted herb bread.  (I am definitely making one of those at home!)  Here’s a snap of the Peoria bridge over the Illinois river.

Picture below the fold (46kb) is a street scene from the 5th floor of the hotel.

Cool shots! … and btw, we had salmon tonight, too, along with asparagus.  But salmon BLT sounds very, very good.  And could be schlepped to work in two parts; zap the salmon in the nuker before assembly.

Hey looks like a great thing, and at no cost to the tax payers.  I am sure the kids will make up lost school time and it is great of the teachers to take vacation time to attend.

Salmon BLT … I will definitely have to try that.

For a twist, assemble your next BLT (with salmon, or without) on a loaf of Garlic Bread fresh from the oven.  An accidental discovery that proved to be delicious!

Looks like a beautiful city at night!

You know I’m drooling on my keyboard right now after reading the sandwich suggestions.

Hey looks like a great thing, and at no cost to the tax payers…

The kids will probably learn a lot more at a professional conference than dozing through another day of politically correct classes.  The association is funded by member dues, not by school districts, and everyone has to come up with their own $$ to attend the conference which means bake sales or out-of-pocket.  And I paid for my own sandwich.

I have always wondered why school districts are so willing to cough up our tax money for sports when .001% of the kids will ever become professional atheletes, but cut music funding every chance they get when lots of kids grow up to make a good living in music.

In culinary school, we made this same type of BLT sandwich using smoked salmon plus adding some very thin slices of red onion.  Cut a bit of Maytag bleu cheese and minced capers into some mayo…..

While on a recent trip to Seattle, we dined on (get this)…smoked salmon chowder.  Even the most well traveled amongst us admitted he had never heard of it.

Just think your basic chowder recipe with generous chunks of the smoked salmon, add a view of the Seattle Sound and blast off!

It was exceptional.  That BLT sounds perfect.  I am coming to see you this year Brother, let’s make a couple!!!

I’m so jealous; I love running a volunteer slot for a big conference.  I would die a happy man if COB ever put together something like that would require us to travel and work a weekend out of a motel.

I do, however, get to run sound next weekend for InterVarsity’s Metamorphisis conference in Decatur.  IV has a production arm that has been supplying us with nice PA gear the past few years and it’s alwasy a pleasure to get to do sound with a killer setup…

The second shot is a beatiful shot by the way.  I think if ever I could moonlight, I’d love to do architectural (sp…I suck) photography…

Your view from the hotel is different than mine is this year.  I wish I could post the pictures by when I try to send pictures from it now my phone just laughs at me with a deep, bellowing, scary voice.
