Midnight in Normal, Illinois

December 13, 2005

Our all-wise city planners are devising a $30m hotel and conference center, which means demolition of some ugly buildings.  This was just completed yesterday, which opens a nice view of the University Christian church.  Unfortunately, this view will again be impossible after the monument to small-town hubris is completed.

Could you get a Pan F+ shot of that printed on Adox Vario fibre paper for me, please?  ;-)   Wish I were there to see it in person.

I was freezing my ass off, bracing the camera on a construction dumpster and trying to stop shivering for about a half second while the shutter was open.  Plus it was at the end of a 16-hour day.

Can’t wait for all you film enthusiasts to go digital.  You’ll really push the quality envelope on digital images and camera companies will try even harder to keep up.

The digital manufacturers have largely ignored us.  What we believe is quality and good industrial design doesn’t matter to them.  The masses want more sizzle than steak, and the sports and photojournalism pros need AF speed and “high ISO performance”.  AA would love the convenience of digital equipment, but would decry a lot of the stuff that drives me nuts.

Guess I’m a dinosaur, but I actually am working on my “post processing” skills in The Gimp and PS.  Then when I get a “real” digital camera, I’ll have the digital darkroom stuff under at least a semblance of control.
