Iron pill

April 2, 2012

Anyone know what this thing is? I found it on the sidewalk:

Cast-iron "pill"

"Iron pill" found on sidewalk

It’s made of cast-iron and it’s shaped like a pill. That’s all I know about it.

You might want to check it for radioactivity :-(

Got any burns on your hands?

I actually did think of radioactive sounding weights but have no idea what one looks like. This object wasn’t warm to the touch (admittedly a crude test), and had heft consistent with ordinary cast iron (also crude). Also there were no markings on it of any kind which would be odd if it were anything dangerous. I left it where it was though so my only source of further information is this photo.

Might it be a magnet made to be fed to cows to collect ferrous iron bits from their digestive system?
I’m a city boy, dunno what they look like, but I’ve heard of ‘em.

Those I have seen; Farm & Fleet carries them and they’re fun toys. But this object wasn’t magnetic. I checked it against my steel key ring. (Should have mentioned that before!)

Keep the ideas coming folks! It’ll bug me until I can figure it out. Slingshot ammunition? Science education curriculum material? Something for a game, maybe?

It may be an iron ore pellet for a blast furnace. Typically they are round, but maybe this is another form.
A blast furnace works the same as a wood pellet, corn pellet stove or furnace. The pellets burn or are heated and the air passes through to the air ducts.

Oooh, I like that! There is an industrial technology major on campus; maybe it’s from there.

    More ideas, anyone?
