Keep Calm And Carry On

June 12, 2011

Don’t start thinking that we might have a bigger problem than $4 gas:

We even have a cultural commonplace for it; “Fiddling while Rome burns”. But like so many other such bits of wisdom (“Pride goeth before a fall” for example) we are perfectly happy to ignore it when we might have to admit our current way of life could be… a mistake. That every mile further we drive down this road will seem like a hundred miles, walking back.

I’m going to paraphrase a quote from Chief Seattle that I saw in a Seattle, Washington museum long ago: When the last food resource is finally gone, the White man will discover that he can’t eat money.

It’s the same for fuel. We won’t discover that we’re out of fuel until we’re out of fuel, and then there will be CHAOS.

I’m not really worried about us running out of fuel; the price will increase as it becomes increasingly scarce, and alternatives will become attractive investment opportunities. We could get there almost overnight by pulling federal subsidies for fossil fuels. (It is a mystery to me why we need to subsidize any profitable product, and fossil energy companies are posting record profits).

Of more concern to me is that we’ll focus so strongly on the supposed economic damage of controlling carbon dioxide emissions, that we’ll lose sight of the catastrophic cost of not controlling them. If the economy is what matters, we need action on greenhouse gases, oh, about ten years ago.

    DOF,
I don’t think our country (USA) will do anything substantive to control greenhouse gas emissions for a long time. There’s just no popular will for it. When we finally do, it will be too little, too late. I know I sound pessimistic, but I really don’t see any way around it now.
