It snows in Illinois in December
December 5, 2010
We got a few inches of heavy, wet snow today – no doubt disproving global climate change. I moved several hundred pounds of it off the driveway and back walk; the parts of my abdomen that are held together by polyester mesh are not happy, and my shoulder joins in the protest.
But the day hasn’t been a total loss; I did try out my new bike tires in the snow and they’re great. It’s going to be a fun winter in spite of occasional shoveling.
For some reason I just have not been able to collect my thoughts this week; there are two pending drafts in the queue.

Some weeks are better than others for collecting thoughts.
I think the time of year, the pending tasks to be done, and the new ones turning up all play an important part in what is accomplished. Well at least it sounds like a good excuse to me!
I’ve become a lot more observant of weather lately. Got up to 65 here in San Francisco today. Average December high here is 58. I can only imagine what kind of a mindfuck that must be to someone who’s just moved here from somewhere like Illinois.
Actually, I was born in San Francisco. Would move back there given the opportunity. Love that city.
Does it seem generally warmer than in years past, or is it a blip?
Well I’ve only been on this earth for a little under 21 years, but it does seem to be getting slightly warmer all the time (except for our summers which will always be cold and suck). Today had one of the warmest mornings in a while. Now that you mention it I remember January 2009 being remarkably warm. But that was when we were in a drought period. It’s hard for me to say.
Last weekend I had the winter tires put on both vehicles, just in time for the first storm of the winter. Within reason, driving is no issue, so I kinda enjoy it.
