Study finds all children safer in back seat

May 3, 2005

This just in: the State Farm insurance company just released a study which finds that ALL pre-teen children are safer riding in the back seat of a car.  (It used to be just kids under 5 because it was discovered that the safety device – air bag – would, um, kill them.)

Hey, Einstein, that’s brilliant!  But wouldn’t anyone be safer in the back seat?  Shouldn’t we make cars with steering wheels in the back seat so no one has to ride in the front?  Just asking.

Just to be contrary here, what happens when the kid needs attention? He suddenly becomes quite, and a look in the mirror reveals he’s engrossed in something. You ask him what he’s got, and he says, “Nothing…”

And that’s when there’s just one back there. “Stop looking at me! Mom, she’s looking at me!” Of course if there are two parents in the car, one can drive and the other can do the child-rearing, but you can’t go everywhere with both parents.

I don’t doubt that under laboratory conditions with a sleeping child the back seat is safer, but I’m not sure how practically useful this is. I’d hate to see a law mandating all children under thirteen ride in the back.

    Hey,
What about the kids ? They don’t want to ride in the back seat even when they are 5. A kid between 5 years and 13 years is kindda old enough to get into trouble and not so old enough to realize the consequences..

I think, it is easier for the driver to notice the kid trying to high-five the passing cars by hanging out of the window if the kid is in the front seat rather then in the rear seat…

Did the survey take into account the amount of accidents that occured when a driver was looking back and trying to seperate two quaralling kids in the back seat ??

    hmmm…just a thought

    i don’t have kids, i have a dog instead.

i also have a travel cage in the back seat.

it strikes me that a similar arrangement for five-year-olds would only take up maybe three times the space, and could likely be installed far more securely.
