Along came a spider…

August 31, 2009

I’ve always been amused that one of the most popular children’s books is about a spider named Charlotte.  It was probably written for kids who didn’t own a magnifying glass.  I certainly like spiders, inverse to my affection for flies.  But cuddly they aren’t.  We get backyard residents like this one every summer:

Someone asked me what kind of spider this is.  It’s the eight-legged kind, but I’m pretty sure it’s harmless.  Unless you’re a fly, which is what the glob in front of the spider looked like as I went to get my camera.  This is all that was left when I got back five minutes later.

I believe that is an Orb Weaver spider, sometimes known as a Harvest Orb Weaver. We get some real big’uns here in Alabama from this time of year up until the first hard freeze in November. Those of us that like to hike in the woods are very familiar with them. I have lots of fun watching my hiking partners go in to Arachnoleptic fits when they walk through a web.
These spiders are very timid and are harmless to people, but they will bite if you mash them. Just flick them off you and you won’t get bit. I usually have at least one of these build a web on my porch rails every fall. I enjoy watching them build their webs in the evening. Some of them will tear their web down every morning and rebuild it in the evening.

    Terrible spider.
I’m wondering if spiders were human-sized…

Good shot, Pops.  The blurry window behind it served to frame it perfectly.
