Gmail has decided I am spamming myself

August 30, 2009

I noticed late this week that I was not receiving email notifications of comments from threads here in the Decrepit zone.  After spending two hours looking through menus and logs in Expression Engine and not finding the cause, it occurred to me – doh! – to check folders on my Gmail account.  They weren’t in Spam, but Gmail Trashed them for some reason.  OK fine!  I selected them and clicked “Move to Inbox”, whereupon Gmail dropped them all in Spam, where I had to go rescue them a second time.  I’ll be, as they say in disaster movies, “monitoring the situation”.

I hate to miss your comments; usually they’re the best part of a thread!

So will this comment of mine end up in Trash or Spam? or will we get to read all its glory on the blog and in the box?

The comment showed up just fine on the blog, but Gmail dropped it into Spam.  No idea why.

This is only a Test.  Does the Comment show up at the Blogger’s InBox?

I just tried adding Decrepit Old Fool to my contacts list.  But no idea why Gmail thinks it’s spam.  Maybe the Gmail server has gotten spam reports about automatically generated comments.

Does the e-mail that arrives from here have your gmail address as the sender? I’ve received spam e-mail that was supposedly from my address. That’s usually a dead giveaway, since I seldom feel the need to send myself e-mail.

That’s what it turned out to be, I think.  I changed the sender address from DOF to be Decrepit Old Fool instead of my actual email address, then added DOF to my contacts list, and the messages are coming in now.

Looking back through the Spam folder, I missed a lot of comments.  But it’s fixed now
