Just getting started (on a lot of things)

March 13, 2009

I’m just getting started reading The Watchmen.  It’s very good.  But the characters are not happy ones.  I’m two chapters in, and these guys make screwed-up sociopath Bruce Wayne look like Norman Vincent Peale.

I’m one week into learning to ride a unicycle.  So far I’ve gotten to where I’m able to ride 15 feet while holding onto a rope.  My son reminds me that I am no longer young and have multiple concussions to my detriment, so progress may not be rapid.  He is right.

I’m in the early stages of a new website for the college – the meetings and information-gathering stage.  It occurs to me that static pages may not be the best model for the next iteration.  Would anyone like to share thoughts on your favorite Content Management System, and reasons why you like it?

My left shoulder is beginning to heal, but slowly.  Whatever I did to it 10 days ago, I should avoid doing again.

I’m midway through watching Swing Kids.  One of the main characters is played by Robert Sean Leonard, better known as “Wilson” on the TV show ‘House’.  Another character is played by someone named Christian Bale.  It’s a very scary movie.

One of the things I liked best about Watchmen is that the characters were so immensely screwed up.  So was the world.  It even makes 1984 look like a big fluffy bunny novel.  And they thankfully didn’t try to happy everybody up for the big screen – I was afraid they’d turn Rorschach into a normal guy with charming quirks.

George, darling – I sincerely hope you’ll refrain from putting your left shoulder through hell in the future.  Although the fact you’re learning to ride a unicycle does not give me hope… ;-P

Thanks for mentioning Swing Kids.  It sounds like a good pairing with American Psycho for a Christian Bale weekend.  Woot!

Wish I could help you on the website front.  Alas, I’m a complete ignoramus in that department.

I don’t know what the phrase “content management system” means, if anything.

I went to wee “Watchmen,” it was diverting. I am not tempted to read the “graphic novel.”

Well, there’s always ExpressionEngine, with which you are already somewhat familiar.

Barring that there’s a couple of Open Source possibilities to consider such as Drupal and Joomla. You can try both and more at Open Source CMS.
