Our constitution makes this a Christian nation, part I

June 8, 2008

In case you were wondering if our constitution makes the United States of America a Christian nation the answer is “Yes”.  John McCain says so.  At length:

Whew!  Glad we got that cleared up.

So how much is pandering and how much is he for real about? The world will likely never know.

It seems that the good senator is unaware that the words “In God We Trust” on our money and the addition of the words “one nation under God” to the Pledge of Allegiance were incorporated in the 1950’s, during Eisenhower’s administration. This was essentially a reaction to Communist paranoia rampant at that time.

Our Founding Fathers were extremely careful to avoid this type of language in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. I think that it would do the senator some good if he actually read these documents and not parrot what his religious teachers have told him.

And, as Webs05 said, there’s a good chance that a bit of pandering is going on along with actual ignorance of what these documents really say.

And I thought McCain to be just a harmless old fool. Now we add the dimension of downright scary. He obviously never read the Constitution or other founders’ writings. What a complete idiot!
