And a happy friggin’ Tuesday mornin’ to you, too

February 1, 2005

Woke up too early as usual this morning and went to check my email… TRACKBACK SPAM!!!  A couple dozen entries.  This means that some moral defective has found a chink in MY website to advertise his stupid casino or whatever.

First I must say that EE needs a better panel for handling comments and trackbacks.  It’s far too tedious to remove them – too many mouse clicks involved.  I have better things to do.

Second, I just wonder about the ethical education of anyone who would do that.  Didn’t their parents ever say, “Keep your hands off other people’s stuff”?

A couple of my favorite blogs have posted this Interview with a spammer recently.  If you want to see what vital ingredient is missing in some miscreant, go read it…

Worst of all!  I think I accidentally deleted someone’s legitimate comment while swinging the blade through trackback spam.

One of the interesting things about the interview is that “Sam” is asked a couple of times about the morality of what he does, and he replies that it’s *legal*, and that the *moral* question is one that each individual has to answer—the implication being that he feels no moral qualms about hijacking other sites to post his links (since they “invite” it by having user interaction space, just like that girl in the mini-skirt is “inviting” an assault).

I noticed the same thing around 8:10am EST this morning.. Most got slammed by my blacklist entries, but some snuck through… although the quick and judicious use of phpMyAdmin quickly took care of that…

I opened the exp_trackbacks table, sorted by date – descending, and highlighted the spam that made it through… and all should be good now

Email me on the side if you want more info :)
