Rainbows: the new apocalypse

August 7, 2008 2 comments

Perhaps you were not aware that metallic oxide salts in our water supply and in the oxygen supply cause rainbows.

The narrator does not mention that since God caused the first rainbow, then God is the first polluter.  This rainbow, therefore, must be a sign of the apocalypse.  If you really want her to worry, tell her that the liquid coming out of that sprinkler contains di-hydrogen monoxide, which in large enough doses can be fatal.  And remember, she can vote.
Hat tip to Lucas, who finds the damndest things

There’s “stupid” and then there’s “Facepalm stupid”

The World Shipping Council has a novel argument for why speed limits actually increase the chances of a collision: you’re in the area longer.  Seriously.  Why, this could revolutionize traffic safety!

Only one reaction to anything that dumb comes to mind…

Should I file this under religion?  Under politics?  Or under stupidity?

I could write a long, drawn out response to the Illinois representative who told atheist Rob Sherman “You have no right to be here!”, and opining that it is dangerous for children to even know his philosophy even exists, thus taking a blowtorch to the US Constitution.  After all, her words are an almost perfect example of “hate speech” if anyone needed one – and in her official capacity, no less. But why should I bother?  En Tequila Es Veridad answers representative Davis just about right and then goes on to explain the pathological fear of atheists.  If there was ever an appropriate use of profanity…

Update: Davis has apologized.  Sort of.  Well OK, not really.

Heroic stupidity

Back in November I thought this guy would serve as my image of ultimate stupidity: “Wash. state man uses shotgun to loosen lug nut; effort does not go well”.

Apparently the phrase “angle of incidence equals angle of reflection” had not entered his lexicon.  Along with a great many other things.  It reminded me of that line from the movie, Nobody’s Fool; “You know how I feel about arming morons!”

But this morning I heard about these two guys: “Men Shoot Themselves In Tattoo Attempt

OK, I’m not exactly an expert on guns, but a .357 magnum is a revolver, isn’t it?  So the hammer has to be pulled back for the trigger to be all that sensitive.  I guess they wanted the tattoo to depict the pistol with its hammer pulled back, ready to fire.  I bet it happened while they were tracing the trigger…

How do emergency room personnel keep a straight face?  How do cops?

Update: I decided he needed a stocking cap.  The original, pre-stocking-cap picture is below the fold.

“You’ve got to be carefully taught…”

October 6, 2007 1 comment

GSU president orders ‘hanging photo’ off the web.  The “adults” appearing in the picture seem to feel that the whole incident was overblown.

What?  Is that what I think it is?  Yes -  it is a picture of a little girl, a kindergartener 6 years old, with a noose around her neck as part of a school lesson about historical lynchings and Jena, Louisiana. The GSU president is deluding himself if he thinks taking it off the student newspaper website will make it go away.

What’s the lesson?  If you don’t want a picture of yourself doing something this dumb on the interwebs, maybe you should think twice about doing it in the first place. And maybe to think again about answering one stupidity with another.  And about what and how we teach our children.

(I’d post an excerpt of the picture – even got as far as saving a cropped version of it to upload to my own server – but I couldn’t stomach having it on my blog)

Desecration

I’m at a loss to imagine why anyone would vandalize the Vietnam Memorial  [pictures]

Is it some random thing?  Some half-assed idiot protest against the Iraq war?  Something political?  Some weird religious annointing? WHAT?!!!

Hope they catch whoever did it.  I’m just dying to hear their explanation…

Preferring poetry to pugnacity

July 16, 2007 2 comments

I was going to complain about this shameful outrage in the US Senate, but instead decided to share…

one of my favorite poems, written by the greatest literary genius of the 20th century.

I don’t know why;  it just seemed to fit my mood better.

And what the heck, here’s another.

Ed has a couple more articles on the Christian activists trying to shout down a Hindu prayer in the Senate:

Astoundingly, spectacularly stupid idea

June 29, 2007 2 comments

Step one: the Nevada System of Higher Education’s Board Of Regeants endorses a plan that would encourage college professors to carry guns on campus, to counter campus shootings like the one that happened at Virginia Tech.  (Because you know, those are just happening all the time… or is it, like, one or two per year, worldwide?)

Steps two and three: media finds out about the plan, and a public information officer says; “No decision has been made” on the plan to arm professors.  Really.  We’re just thinking about it.

Gee, fellas, how much time do you really need to think about this one?

The war on chemistry?

June 17, 2007 3 comments

Hank Fox mines a motherload of legal absurdity in new regulations on chemistry equipment.  Yep, you buy some PH strips, or an Erlenmeyer flask, and they’ll be watching you…
