Doom foretold by child’s question

There was a yard sale at the end of the little street where I live, so I walked on down. Nothing of interest to me but I exchanged pleasantries with my neighbor and headed back up the hill.
Their little boy was playing in the street. As I passed he asked me; “Why are you walking?”

A few years back when I was still living in the US, I walked to a new shopping area that had been built about a mile away from the downtown, sidewalk rich area where my house sat. As I was coming back with a daypack (backpack) full of groceries and a bag in hand, my neighbor asked me the same question finishing with, “Did your car breakdown?”
Because I can.
Help thin out American obesity !
Didn’t Ray Bradbury write a short story about a man who was arrested because he was taking a walk at night?
Found it! The Pedestrian, 1951
Wow! That is a creepy story!
I found a film adaptation of it on YouTube. It’s in German but after reading the story it’s really worth watching.
Lovely little film. It would be nice if someone added subtitles.
Knowing the length of your street (little/short indeed!) this is just amazing. Feel sorry for that kid.
I have never seen anyone in the family walking up the Court or on a bicycle. Always in an SUV, convertible top car, or sometimes a motorcycle. And living on a cul-de-sac, they have to come past my house on the open corner. Sad, but true.
