Oh right, the Oscars…

The Oscars are on right now.  Like the State Of The Union address, I always just catch the summary the next day.  But if District 9 does not hop out of there on its weird insectoid legs with an armload of Oscars, I will once again be reminded that it’s all a sham.

Since there’s nothing on television, I’m going out for peanut butter and crackers.

Ahem, I am firmly planted on the edge of the couch watching all the frippery :)

It wasn’t a total waste of time. I mended the sleeve of my jacket and knitted 2 baby hats on my peg loom.
And I’m really glad Sandra Bullock took home Best Actress award.

One reason I don’t know why people care about the awards at all is that until you’ve seen a large number of movies that came out in the past year, you probably don’t have a well informed opinion of which ones were the best.

Movies? the Academy Awards Presentation is about movies?
Oh, no no, that 4 hour long program is for looking at clothes and jewelry and seeing who will mess up reading the teleprompter.
    and the Dancing was Superb!
    An evening’s entertainment unto itself.

The movies are for watching later, most likely on dvd, and deciding on my own whether it was worthwhile or not.

Well they still snubbed District 9.  There should be a category for “best film that put colonialism in its moral context without insipid sexy blue Disney-fied aliens”.

I’m not surprised that District 9 didn’t win. It had two things going against it – it was a foreign film and it was science fiction. As far as the Oscars are concerned, it barely qualifies as a movie.

On the plus side, Dana reports that Avatar didn’t win anything much, either. I still haven’t seen it, but no one I know who has a mind to speak of has called it “thoughtful”.
