Footprints

I thought it would just be a picture of footprints in snow,

but by accident it turned out to be an optical illusion.

It’s an extremely compelling one too!  I can’t get it to do a gestalt “flip” to the correct orientation.  If I had a good image viewer handy (stupid library computers), I would try rotating it, and see if that helps.

lol! I can’t get it to flip either…

The only way I got the illusion to go away – so that they actually looked like footprints – was to invert the colors. The snow muddies up, but it looks like a footprint then.

I’ve tried flipping it, reversing it, inverting it, but I can only get it to go the right way now and then.  The lighting conditions of the picture were unusual – sunlight was bouncing off a large glass wall and reflecting onto the snow which was also illuminated by a blue sky.  But other than being a little underexposed it’s a straight shot.

Does anyone know why some pictures just seem inverted?
