Where were we today? (update)

Hmm, a small town, Civil War era, with a lighthouse at the end of the main drag.
Any guesses?
(No fair going over to MrsDoF’s blog and looking)

Update: 05 November 9:15am… here’s another hint.  Paul’s observation about tree foliage should give you some idea of the latitude.

How would you like to try navigating that river on a little raft?

  1. Near as I can come—it’s somewhere on the Great Lakes.

  2. No. I take that back—If it were on the Great Lakes, the trees would have turned colors by now, wouldn’t they?

Correct: we are not on the Great Lakes ;-)

I won’t ruin it for everyone. But have fun and enjoy the time off!

    Without looking, Hannibal?

  6. OK. I believe it’s somewhere on the Mississippi River.  But Hannibal is too far North, isn’t it?  How about Vicksburg?

From a cultural perspective, how different is it to go on vacation somewhere that’s not too different from home? I see English signage and American style cars and architecture.

I don’t mean that in a critical sense, but just curiosity.

Yep!  You nailed it.  Since it’s been a very warm fall, the leaves are just starting to turn now.

It’s more of a trip through time than across cultures.  Hannibal is the boyhood home of Samuel Clemens, so there’s plenty for a couple history nerds to enjoy.  We’ve been having a wonderful time, and this trip will probably spawn a number of sentimental posts of embellished factuality.

  11. Does Hannibal still have those wacky public signs that make no grammatic sense?
