Thinking of upgrading to Vista, Microsoft’s new gee-whiz whimmydiddle? The US Department Of Transportation says, “Woah!” And they’re not keen on IE7 or Office 2007, either.
Wonder if somebody got hold of a copy of Open Office? I’ve been using it for 3 years – even for presentations – and nobody’s noticed. Or maybe they picked up on this release from the Free Software Foundation.
Can’t blame the DOT really. The cost of having to train, or half ass train employees is going to far exceed the cost of the OS which is already un-godly high…
I read in the Business section of some paper that M$ was expecting to sell 200 million copies in 2 years of Vista. Keep in mind that number includes pre-installed versions on Dell systems and what not. Windows XP, which aint perfect, but is a damn good OS in my eyes sold 150 million in 2 years.
M$ I got news for yea! There is NO WAY IN HELL you are going to come anywhere near those numbers. Not even close!
The only thing that could possibly save them is if DX10 takes off and software producers take advantage of DX10.
Webs…you are not counting all the copies that Microsoft is trying to sell in the emerging markets like India and China……
Thats a fresh slate for Microsoft and they are actually doing a great job promoting Vista there
We’re selling Vista in China? What the hell are we trying to do, start a war?
I thought they got started on XP? And if they didn’t why the heck aren’t they using Apple or Linux? I would kill to have had my parents start me out on Unix or Linux.
But even with the world market involved, Vista is so crappy I still have a hard time believing they are going to make their mark.
the only problem with OO.o is it doesn’t have anything like MS Access.
yeah, i know how much Access sucks; i administer “real” databases as part of my day job. but for a prototyping and what-if tool, and for a quick-and-dirty GUI interface to database servers elsewhere, it’s hard to beat Access. OO.o’s database tool does empathically not come close, i’m afraid.
…but being a Linux user, i can’t really use Access much anyway… i’m usually making do with things like phpMyAdmin and straight SQL, as well as some homebrew tools. i’d really love an Access-lookalike in OO.o, though, it’d speed up my job immensely.
Good point about Access. I noticed there is a database module in the latest incarnation of Open Office and had wondered how it measures up to Access. Sounds like they need to focus on improving that tool.
Very very interesting… Dell is going to sell a new line of computer just for China that is cheap and affordable.
And the computers are not going to use Vista, but rather Windows XP. My guess is Dell has tested Vista like I have, and unlike me, they are silently protesting Vista’s use.
