Fun household task

November 1, 2005 3 comments

Our house is a 1950’s ranch-style that has had rooms added none-too-skillfully by a former owner.  So termite inspection involves some rather fancy climbing and crawling.  For that matter, so is any other repair or inspection.

  • The overly flexible breakfast nook floor turns out to be a lack of joist braces.  The joists themselves are solid

  • The questionable siding is another matter, which I will turn over to an exterminator (and possibly a carpenter)
  • I’m quite fond of spiders (preferring them to their food) but wearing hundreds of webs and egg sacs is not a positive fashion statement
  • Keep some Betadine wash as part of your first-aid kit.  Crawling around sometimes involves treating a filth-infused laceration
  • When your cell phone is in your pocket for some damn reason (instead of, as is the usual case, in a sturdy holster) it will fall out of your pocket at the farthest point from the entrance to the crawl space, necessitating another foray into the land of spiderwebs to retrieve it.  This is where a really intelligent small dog would be handy.

I’ll be installing my own joist braces (simple).  Siding, I will leave to a carpenter.
